We were at Qatar National Convention Center to watch Chinese ballet company Suzhou Ballet Theatre China’s The Nutcracker adaptation on 12 November 2016.
Since there are traffic diversions all around the Qatar National Convention Center, we had hard time to arrive to venue. Eventually, we managed to find our way there and parked our car. Don’t ask me how.
When we arrived, we have noticed that the venue was full of viewers already. “There must be a full of ballet lovers here in Doha,” I thought. This was not the truth obviously. The reality was that there is not much thing to do here in Doha therefore people are trying to see all the attractions available in town. I noticed that most of the viewers where western foreigners who I believe used to go ballet in their home towns. Here in Doha, ballet is a unique thing which you should not miss.
This was my first ballet experience. I had limited (no clue) expectations due to this reason.
When the show started I took note of the rhythm of the dancers (hope it is appropriate to call them as such). They were in a perfect harmony. That was stunning. The atmosphere of the stage was warm. There was not much to see as scene though.
What I found fascinating was seeing a ballet company from China where communism is a reality, comes to an Islamic state of middle east and performs a show which has many Christian motives like Noel tree. I believe this is a pure result of globalization that I found interesting to note.
I have to say the the Nutcracker ballet was a little bit ordinary histrionics. I have seen much better shows here in Doha.
Nevertheless, I was happy to watch another show in Qatar National Convention Center. I am not so sure whether I would like to see another ballet performance but I would definitely listen a classic music concert.
Last note, the conducter Jingkai Sun and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra was superb.
See you in another great performance.
